Holiday Jams

Taken from http://www.siomusic.com/2012/01/body-language-social-studies-deluxe.html

Hello again :)

Gonna try something different this time with CNY upon us right now. If you haven't already noticed the red that has coloured Hong Kong from top to bottom, it's the holidays once again. Despite the so-called "free time" you get, most of my friends (me included) have work to do. This is what happens when you get a professor who doesn't understand the Chinese custom of taking a break every February. But anyways, whilst I'm busy working my ass off for my projects, I also tried to lessen the pain through some holiday jams. Besides Ra Ra Riot's new single "Beta Love" (which is addictive let me tell you), pretty much everything else has been around for a while. I bought Body Language's album Social Studies recently and it's practically my work music now. I've also got some other stuff below so check it out and enjoy the week!

Never tried shooting on the street but boy was it fun... While there were noticeably more people giving us weird looks, it definitely made for a great background for this lookbook shoot. There's also something surprisingly exciting about shooting on a busy street. Perhaps it had to do with the cars that sped past us every so often? Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun as you can see in the last pic. Happy CNY everyone!

RETROSUPERFUTURE

Bought these last week at Lane Crawford and haven't stopped thinking about them. As superficial as this may sound, I always think that architects have the obligation to adopt a personal style and so I thought I might as well go get some new glasses since my last pair somehow flew off at a club. The name RETROSUPERFUTURE itself is cool enough to get my attention as I always wanted to get something retro but at the same time, modern. And to answer this need, I got the glasses above with degradé acetate complete with round frames. Can't wait to wear them some day!

Vintage finds and creative minds: SoHo on a Saturday afternoon

Just a quick photo diary of my time with Nat and Nic in SoHo last saturday. Australian artist Anthony White gave us an excuse to check out the neighbourhood with his exhibition at the Cat Street Gallery. It was also a good excuse for us to check out the cool looking vintage store Select 18 on the way. According to the owner, many of the things are done on consignment. If you walk to the back of the store, you'll even get to try on retro looking shades without breaking the bank.

I also highly recommend checking out the exhibition at the Cat Street Gallery which goes until 17th February. White specialises in abstract expressionism and it's not until you see it in person that you get to really experience the painting. Just down the road is yet another good artist to check out at Galerie NeC. Louise Hindsgavl's ceramic work presents the relationship between human and nature with her aptly named exhibition "Human Desire and Last Minute Pleasures". Drop by SoHo, get lost and have a look around. You never know what else you might be able to find...

RUDE! Ad campaigns done right by Alexander Wang

Spring 2012 T by Alexander Wang Campaign featuring Die Antwoord

I don't know about you but part of the attraction of fashion for me has a lot to do with the music. Last spring, Die Antwoord was featured in the ad campaign for T by Alexander Wang. It didn't really show much of the clothes but it worked because it sold something even more important to me: attitude. And so I thought to myself, how will the master of urban chic be able to top that campaign? How wrong I was... If I remember correctly, it was  around that time when Azzealia Banks' hit single 212 exploded in the fashion universe. Not a man to lose a good opportunity, the next campaign, also from T by Alexander Wang, featured Banks singing her hit song Van Vogue.

Fall 2012 T by Alexander Wang Campaign featuring Azzealia Banks

Fast forward to Spring 2013 and we see Alexander Wang's next featuring act Bon Qui Qui from MADtv as a "salesperson" at his NYC flagship. For those who don't know, Bon Qui Qui is a character played by Anjelah Johnson in Madtv's comedy sketch as a 90s ghetto counter girl at "King Burger". Other cameo appearances include A$AP Rocky, actress Natasha Lyonne and creative ambassador of Barney's Simon Doonan. Can't wait to see what he has in store for us next time! (See what I did there? Never mind...)

Check out the vids below the jump!

3D printing: The new haute couture?

During lunch, Nat told me a little about her latest D&T experiment with 3D printing. At the expense of her school, she made a detailed ring out of plastic that is made to look like metal. It was then that I realised how 3D printing is becoming much more of a common phenomenon (or maybe it's just me being slow...)

I came across the couture collections last week and found to my delight, dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen's latest avant garde collection at Paris couture week. Together with MIT professor Neri Oxman, van Herpen worked on a multi-material 3D printed cape and skirt which composed of “both rubber-like and rigid elements that are 3D printed simultaneously on the Stratasys Objet Connex system.” As cool as it sounds however, I always like to know the effort and craftsmanship that goes into a dress. More so with couture as you can see with Valentino's collection that used 500 hours just for the piping of one outfit (rumour has it that roller developed carpal tunnel syndrome). Perhaps we'll get to see the results of combining the beauty of human crafstmanship with the precision of 3D printing one day. One can only hope...
