ABANDONED | Photography Exhibition @ JCCAC

Coming across this invitation for a photography exhibition at the Rat's Cave, I was pleasantly surprised to see young emerging local photographers present their work at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre. As opposed to the glamorous portrayal of metropolitan life, these photographers capture the destructive nature of time and a paradise that once was but has now been left to decay. It's an interesting dichotomy that is constantly being explored and openly criticises the Utopian idealism that is associated with Modernism.

Photographer Phoebe Yeung centers on the relationship between humans and the buildings that we occupy in her stunning black and white series. Her unconventional "portraits" remind me of the work by one my favourite photographers Chen Jiagang that I saw 2 years ago at the Contemporary by Angela Li.

Other photographers in the exhibition include BLO, CM Lam, Egg Cheung, å†¬å¦® and another photographer that I can't type here since I have no idea how to input Chinese characters (how embarrassing...)
Catch the exhibition at the L1 Gallery of the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre before Friday 3 August!

Club Monaco Fall/Winter 2013 Preview

I've always admired Phong Le from Le Societé Fair with his stylish sartorial pieces that are both tailored and classic. Having just been to the preview for Club Monaco's Fall/Winter 2013 collection, I've come to understand why he is a fan of Club Monaco's easy-to-wear wardrobe pieces. From what I've seen, many of the must-have items reflect an urban sensitivity that form the foundation of a modern wardrobe. So for those of you who want to spend wisely, look no further and think about investing in a party dress that you can wear over and over again.
Echoing the urban sensitivity that I was just mentioning, Fall 2013 is a collection inspired by a "uniquely modern sense of juxtaposition: the contemporary feminine persona as confronted in the photography of Cindy Sherman, awkward versus pretty, playful versus quirky, strong versus soft..." And for those of you who don't know, Cindy Sherman is a photographer/model who experiments with the concept of female stereotypes and the roles they play in society. So for a collection to be described as such, there's bound to be an outfit here fit for any occasion...
For women, timeless styles and shapes are re-worked in traditional fabrics like eyelet, clique and lace, playing off more structured fabrics like bonded cottons, quilted pieces, double knits, jacquards and neoprene for contrast. Eccentricity and clean lines run throughout the collection and are accented by details like faux texture patterns and pops of colour in African and 60s inspired prints.
And for the guys? Dressed down tailored pieces are mixed with cool knits, 60s inspired silhouettes and a nod to hi-tech functionality in traditional styles.

Come winter and the clothes become infused with a sense of festivity fit for the holiday season. One of my favourites is a feather skirt (below) in a ombré like effect that would be perfect for a night out. The collection for Winter 2013 reworks Club Monaco's classics with new shapes and proportions in dusty shades of pink and blue with the occasional pop of pink as an added accent.

"This season, I drew inspiration from the changing tones of late autumn mixed with the modern and edgy aesthetic of photographer Julia Hetta. Dark, but still pretty, futuristic yet historical." said Caroline Belhumear, lead women's designer for Club Monaco.
Luxe fabrics emerge with an autumnal flair: calk-skin bonded with wool; cashmere, shearling and stretch leather. Outerwear remains at the heart of the collection with cropped faux fur jackets accented in blocks of colour. The flared skirt above, also one of my favourites, is a fun and flirty piece that gives a classic yet modern approach to festival attire. Also worth noting is the top below with a bold ruffle that runs from the shoulder down to the waist in a contrasting black and white lycra combo.

Enjoy the rest of the clothes in the photos below!

[OOTD] Streets of Hong Kong

Blogging has really turned me into a different person. For one, I'm actually concerned about the fact that I haven't posted an outfit in more than 2 weeks. Call me a narcissistic bitch but I can't help shooting what I wear. Though as of late, the weather in Hong Kong has been experiencing a range of mood swings making it extremely hard for me to shoot. After rescheduling several times with my friend Emily from Style By Emmy, I finally decided that I had to do it no matter what.

I've been thinking about going to Tai Hang for a long time but never had a good enough reason. After the I.T party at the W though, I definitely had a good impression of the ice cream from Lab Made. My friend keeps talking about my food baby and yes, I'm feeding it well... I digress, but I assure you a Tai Hang shopping feature is on the way!
