FASHION | Thom Browne Spring 2014 @ Joyce HK

Speak of the event of events! The hoi polloi of fashion descended upon Joyce for the preview of Thom Browne's Spring 2014 collection with a special appearance by the designer himself. Noted for his school boy silhouettes and unconventional style, Browne is no less a tour de force for next season's offering.
While this season may not have been everybody's cup of tea, Browne's specialty in menswear is without a doubt a reaffirmation of his love for uniforms. Specifically, we're talking about military sportswear with hints of fetishism what with the abundant buttons that spoke of stifled sex and perhaps even BDSM. Of course, don't let my description scare you away as the clothes themselves are impeccably tailored.

Here we have two fine gentlemen in full Thom Browne gear!
Among the enviable clothes on display, I find the people who attend such events are always, excuse the cliché, dressed to impressed. Call it peacocking, if you will, but I personally find this fierce and occasionally competitive "fashion show" extremely amusing. Or perhaps it's due to my habitual search for streetstyle which has now become a "duty" of mine to capture for my other streetstyle blog Style on Pottinger.

And as this woman's beanie so eloquently explains, "Shit happens" [fashion events and otherwise].

Of course, the other joy in attending these crazy events is, as I've previously pointed out in my FNO post, bumping into friends like the two below. On the left we have fashion blogger Christophe W from Du Poivre Noir and Time Out columnist Arthur Tam on his right.
Going to events like these are also a bit like reading this post. You get sidetracked easily but you also remember that the clothes themselves are the main event.

Comparing the clothes I see on the rack to the runway collection on Style.com, many of the pieces were definitely toned down for commercial reasons. Nonetheless, the collection in Joyce were all menswear essentials that played with swatches of plaid, stripes and a wide variety of textile - most of which were  in shades of grey with the occasional pop of red and blue.

Alas I see a woman wearing Mary Katrantzou!

The spotlight on Thom Browne as he socialises with his legion of fans...

I caught myself staring at this amazing quilted vest on the rack until I couldn't take it any longer and tried it on myself. The front panels look amazing as the quilting was skilfully made into the likeness of plaid. The back was made in a contrasting striped fabric that was a pleasant surprise when I turned around.

Amazing shoulder detail. Streetstyle worthy or unnecessary? I'll let you decide...

Many thanks to fashion entrepreneur and co-founder of Clot Kevin Poon for the invitation!
And of course, with the man himself...
