In 2009, Raf Simmons collaborated with longtime friend and artist Sterling Ruby on his Spring 2010 collection, transforming fabrics and even the interior of his Tokyo flagship store with kaleidoscopic splatter prints (above and below).
Fast forward to 2013, it's time to get excited again.
Announced just recently, Raf Simmons will present his Menswear show on January 15, sharing his name with Ruby on a co-designed collection that will be available for Fall 2014. To add to the excitement, the coming collection will only be offered for one season at retail stores and stockists. A spokesperson from the Belgian brand claims,
"This unique collection, born from a long standing friendship and mutual admiration and the desire by both men to experience a creative process together, will translate into a complete men's wardrobe that will combine the aggressive formal aesthetics of artist Sterling Ruby with Raf Simmons' constant search for innovation in men's fashion."
It's an interesting conversation that both artists bring to their respective fields - Raf Simmons in favour of clean minimal lines whilst Ruby inspired by the raw nature of graffiti and urban life. Perhaps it's this reason why sayings like "opposites attract" are indeed the case.
