ART | Janaina Tschäpe: Contemplating Landscape

Internationally celebrated New York-based artist Janaina Tschäpe presents her first solo exhibition 'Contemplating Landscape' in Hong Kong at the Edouard Malingue Gallery. Inspired by natural landscapes, Tschäpe's exploration through multiple mediums allows her to freely discover the beauty of abstraction.

Soft, organic shapes are reinterpreted into new forms, exhibiting a sense of unpredictability that mimics the impermeable nature of our environment. Dark Sea (2014), a large wall-hung painting, displays a beautifully abstracted landscape with bursts of colour, bold brushstrokes and dripping paint, all of which "evokes the natural process of blossoming, flourishing and decay."
Besides the sprawling canvas paintings of abstracted landscapes, Tschäpe also delves into the microscopic world with splashes of amoeba-like paint in Hydromedusa (2014) and Spiny Mericea (2014). The delicacy of the seemingly unintentional splotches of paint is balanced with a careful composition that is both lively and carefree.

On that note, one cannot simply ignore the sprawling wall installation aptly titled Ocean Study II (2014). Done on painted strips of paper, they resemble, "in their random arrangement, the loosely tangled sinuous lines of plant life."
If that's not enough to capture your attention, the gallery also displays her paper sculptures folded into prisms that, "complement the wall hung works yet also operate as interventions of the gallery space, themselves acting as elements that have been inserted in the visional landscape."

Big or small, there is no doubt that Janaina Tschäpe is a master of our senses, all while enticing our imagination with the small-yet-powerful movements of her brush. 'Contemplating Landscape' runs until 3rd May at the Edouard Malingue Gallery so be sure to check it out!
