FOOD | A casual affair at Blue Butcher

Summer is officially over and in a matter of days, I'll be returning to my monotonous school routine making architecture models and dreaming of Christmas. While the thought of impending doom doesn't do much to change my situation, I'm left thinking what got me through those tough days at the studio. Personally, the perfect combination is a nice meal with a couple of friends. An afternoon brunch of bellinis and eggs royale perhaps?

But let's be honest here. Student budgets don't call for such extravagant tastes. A warm bowl of chicken leg, egg and instant noodles is probably the best pick-me-up for an all-nighter. Someone wise once said, "You don't need a silver fork to eat good food."And with that, I know for a fact that you don't have to go to a Michelin-starred restaurant to enjoy a plate of good food (a guide which, to my opinion is a tad biased towards showmanship and avant-gardism).

Which brings me to the main topic of this post: a casual lunch with a friend from high school. And what's more casual than a nice, juicy burger? Admittedly, the best one in town is the one and only burger from The Butcher's Club. However, Blue Butcher being a forerunner of the burger craze in Hong Kong must mean something.
Upon arrival, my friend and I were seated in an inviting open dining area that had a sprawling window that illuminated the dark interior space. The chairs by the window had a distinct throne-like demeanour that made quite the statement, while the tables themselves were heavy and wooden, mimicking butcher chopping blocks. Arriving way past the time I was scheduled to meet my friend, I was sweating profusely which prompted me to order their specialty draft craft beer. I found the narrow shaped juice glass a little disappointing, having expected a large one to quench my thirst. Upon drinking it however, I was amazed by the sweetness of the brew with a mild floral note that was surprisingly fresh. It was so good I had to order a second round!
Like the rather normal looking beer glass, the wagyu beef burgers arrived on a plain wooden slate served alongside a bowl of fries. A bite of the burger instantly filled my mouth with a distinct smoky flavour, mixed with smoked cheddar cheese, an organic fried egg, lettuce, tomato, onion and roasted garlic aioli. While I missed the juiciness from the beef, its tenderness redeemed itself from being just another normal burger.

Also worth noting were the dangerously sinful fries that had a selection of dips to choose from. The truffle mayonnaise was delightfully rich and helped compliment the crisp and salty fries. I would't mind having a bowl of these everyday!
At the end of the day, good food and witty banter is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. With an inviting space and a low floor to table ratio, my friend and I were able to comfortably catch-up over a few laughs. If you're like me and you're also trying to find a place that serves simple food but in a more refined manner, Blue Butcher has the ambiance and drinks to match.
