FASHION | The Power of Narrative: Kate Moss in Alexander McQueenSpring/Summer 2014 Campaign by Steven Klein

I've always enjoyed a good piece of poetry, especially when things never seem as they are and words carry a double meaning. The master of subversion (in fashion at least) is none other than l'enfant terrible, Alexander McQueen, whose rise to prominence pays tribute to his skillful mastery of illuminating beauty even in the darkest of subjects.

Starring Kate Moss in Alexander McQueen's latest campaign, acclaimed fashion photographer Steven Klein shoots Moss in a post-apocalyptic world that takes advantage of his dark photographic aesthetic.

Moss having recently just celebrated her 40th birthday, was invited to be the face of Alexander McQueen for Sarah Burton's Spring 2014 warrior inspired collection. With an über slick hairstyle made even more exaggerated by yellow hair paint, Moss poses along an uncanny miniature version of herself in a cinematic mise-en-scène that interplays between light and shadow.
Inspired by the 1960s British thriller, Peeping Tom, Sarah Burton went further with the concept and created a fashion film to go along with the campaign. Klein mimics the eerie atmosphere of a serial killer who murders women and records their dying expressions with a portable camera. Moss, in a stark and eerie setting, stares at a selection of monitors before entering a house, moving erratically around the rooms all while a figure appears to be watching her. Very creepy indeed!
